Fennel tea is an herbal tea made out of the seeds of Foeniculum Vulgare. Fennel seeds are used as condiments, because of their strong flavor, but Fennel tea can have medicinal effects, something that naturist medicine has been using for quite some time. Traditional Chinese and Arabic medicine rely heavily on the effects of Fennel tea when it comes to treating gastrointestinal ailments or to improve lactation in pregnant women. Fennel has also been used to treat eye problems, as a diuretic and also in the case of severe cough. At one point, Fennel was even registered as a drug in the US, because of its known effects on the gastrointestinal tract. As a condiment, Fennel has a sweetish taste, which recommends it as a meat condiment when combined with curry and others spices.
Fennel's amazing healing properties have been attributed to some of the chemical substances in its composition, such as anethole, which can act like a phytoestrogen (a vegetal substance similar in structure to the estrogens in the human body, and which can have a similar effect to these). Phytoestrogens, while having many known positive effects on the human body, can also cause a great deal of problems. As such, while Fennel treatments can alleviate gastrointestinal problems by causing a relaxation of the intestinal muscles, the sustained ingestion of fennel and fennel based products in children(as a treatment for colics) has been known to cause the appearance of a condition called thelarche, which basically consists in the premature development of the mammary glands in children.
Fennel tea is prepared by crushing one or two teaspoons of Fennel seeds, placing them into a cup and then pouring hot water on top. The water and crushed seeds should be left covered for about ten minutes, after which it can be strained and drank. Some also state that for a better effect, milk should be poured over the crushed fennel seeds and then left for around three or four minutes, especially since you are trying to relieve digestive malaise by doing so. Fennel seeds can also be used in combination with other seeds and herbs, such as anise seeds and thyme, especially if you are looking to relieve cough or pulmonary discomfort, which the muscle relaxing properties of Fennel's components will help achieve. Fennel extracts have also been used in traditional medicine to improve eyesight, and recent studies have shown that fennel does indeed have regenerative properties for the eye tissue, as animal testing has lead scientists to believe that Fennel can have a positive effect in the treatment of glaucoma.
Like many of the medicinal herbs used today, Fennel can have a great deal of positive impact on the quality of life of someone suffering from certain ailments, and used with caution and under medical supervision, the beneficial effects of Fennel can truly shine. However, it's not indicated to take matters into your own hands with any sort of treatment before consulting a physician before, even if it's only the case of an herbal treatment.
